There are a lot of reasons to like aluminum engine blocks. An aluminum LS block weighs about 100 lbs less than its iron counterpart. That weight affects braking, handling and ETs. These effects are most noticeable in motorsports such as autocross and road racing where vehicle weight and weight distribution are critical elements of handling. In addition, aluminum is a far better at heat transfer than iron. More horsepower means more heat must be removed. Aluminum blocks make that task easier.
Downsides? Iron is stronger and can therefore handle handle more horsepower, all else being equal. Switching to an aftermarket block raises the limits, but that comes at a price. Of late, the prices for aftermarket aluminum blocks have skyrocketed. These cost jumps have a small percentage effect on our billet aluminum engine builds, but a huge effect on our NA street cruisers due to their different price points.
Our solution to the cost problem is strengthening seasoned GM aluminum blocks with aftermarket sleeves to extend their horsepower range. Our sleeve supplier is LA Sleeve who has been building sleeves since 1945. The first-in-class build shown here pushed out 708 hp on our dyno from its 427 cubic inches of displacement (4.000" stroke, 4.125" bore). As with BRE's 700 hp iron LS builds, we use Callies Compstar 8-counterweight cranks to reduce flexing and harmonic vibration. The better crank transmits less stress to the bottom end of the block. This shortblock was completed with Callies Commpstar Extreme rods and Diamond pistons.
The top end on this build features an hydraulic-roller valve train with COMP shaft rockers. The RHS heads were run through our CNCs to deliver the required airflow. A FAST throttle body and LSXR intake manifold tops the long block.
This engine comes with a Holley Terminator X engine management system. The ECU is pre-loaded with the tune from its dyno session making it plug & play.
There are a range of available options and add-ons. The most common option selected is an upgrade to Holley's Terminator X-Max for added capabilites such as trans control and drive-by-wire. Popular add-ons are a serpentine system, paired 4L80e, 1,000 hp rated, automatic overdrive transmission, different intake manifold and custom engraved valve covers.

NOTES
- These engines are not pollution compliant and are intended for transportation use only in pre-pollution controlled vehicles.
- All BRE engines are individually dyno tested and tuned. Customers will be supplied with video of their engine's dyno along with the dyno and build sheets.
- Dyno results on the same engine are influenced by atmospheric conditions. The same engine can easily test +/- 2% different on horsepower depending upon ambient conditions. The engine you receive will have completed its dyno session at no less than 98% of rated horsepower with the tune we provide.
- These engines can be customized upon request and we offer a range of intake manifolds to choose from.
